The Musée de la mer exhibits numerous pieces of traditional pirogues from all eras, tracing the evolution of the shapes and materials used in the manufacture of these Polynesian means of transport.
The Museum of the Sea exhibits a collection of traditional canoes dating from different periods in history, tracing the evolution of the materials and designs of these typically Polynesian craft. There is also an important collection of different species of marine life that was amassed by the American naturalist, Andrew Garret.
