Hawaiki nui va'a, the biggest canoe race in French Polynesia.
The Hawaiki Nui Va'a has become one of the most emblematic sporting events of the year, attracting Tahitians as well as many enthusiasts from across the South Pacific. This outrigger canoe (va'a) race, contested solo or in teams, is a veritable playground for Tahitians, who dominate this discipline on the international scene.

More than 2,000 pirogues line up for this 80-mile race, spread over three days, between the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a and Bora Bora. Hundreds of supporters cheer on the participants from their boats or from the mythical Matira beach in Bora Bora, where the finish line is located. This demanding race showcases the athletic and tactical skills of the competitors, while reminding visitors that the Polynesians were the pioneers of sailing across the South Pacific.

The Hawaiki Nui Va'a also offers a unique opportunity to discover the Society Islands: Huahine, Raiatea with its emblematic UNESCO World Heritage site of Taputapuatea, Taha'a, the hub of pirogue rentals, and of course the legendary Bora Bora. Each island makes every effort to welcome the teams, their friends and families in a warm atmosphere, with festive evenings that preserve and celebrate the traditional Polynesian way of life.
