The Dolphins of Rangiroa

In Rangiroa, close-up dolphin watching has attracted many tourists for over 20 years. However, these interactions can negatively affect the dolphins’ well-being and compromise observer safety. In response to these issues, the Dauphins de Rangiroa Association (DDR) aims to promote a more respectful and sustainable tourism model, aligned with French Polynesia’s environmental goals.

What is the project about

The project aims to establish a permanent space dedicated to raising public awareness about the effects of tourism on dolphins and to promoting responsible practices.

Through weekly presentations, Dauphins de Rangiroa seeks to educate both residents and visitors on dolphin ecology and provide practical solutions to minimize our impact.

This project is part of a broader commitment to developing ethical tourism in French Polynesia.

About the Association

Dauphins de Rangiroa (DDR) is a French law 1901 association dedicated to scientific and participatory research, conservation, awareness, and the sharing of information about the bottlenose dolphins of Rangiroa Atoll, located in the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia.

For the past twenty years, these cetaceans have been targeted by intrusive and sustained tourism activities. DDR has over fifteen years of experience in scientific monitoring of the bottlenose dolphins in Rangiroa and more than ten years of experience working with ecovolunteers from various backgrounds.
