Humpback whales

The Hono Tai project, led by the Oceania association, offers a new way to observe whales and dolphins in French Polynesia: from land. Inspired by the “Monoï Road,” this land-based observation route around the island of Mo’orea (and eventually other islands) aims to raise public awareness of the region’s rich marine biodiversity, promote responsible tourism, and strengthen the protection of iconic marine mammals.

What is the project about

Hono Tai is developing a whale and dolphin observation route from strategically located, publicly accessible viewpoints on Mo’orea.

Educational signs in French, English, and Tahitian will be installed at each site to provide information about local species, promote responsible wildlife watching, and encourage public engagement through interactive QR codes.

This inclusive project also targets younger generations through an educational program (OMM Kids) and citizen science activities, with plans to eventually expand the initiative to Tahiti, Rurutu, Hao, and Nuku Hiva.
