Polynesian Culture

The history of the Polynesian people dates back thousands of years, when our ancestors came from Southeast Asia aboard large va’a ta’ie—or sailing canoes in Tahitian—to populate the islands of Moana Nui. Oceanians were the world’s first and most skilled ocean navigators. Today, the challenge is to revive these traditions and pass them on, ensuring Polynesian culture continues to thrive.

What is the project about

The Va’a Hiva association aims to be a key player in this revival by building two traditional sailing canoes, known as va’a tīpaerua, typical of the Society Islands.

The first canoe will be constructed using wood, highlighting history, traditional techniques, and plant-based materials.

The second will use composite materials to combine durability and sustainability, blending modern techniques with ancestral values and traditional design.
